Dr. Candow knew he wanted to be a physician early, and he can name why: his own primary care doctor, who talked to him like a person and took him seriously. He decided to be that for somebody else. He went into primary care specifically to take care of the whole person, and spent four and a half years at an underserved health clinic.
His standard is simple and he states it plainly:
“If I’m not going to treat you the same way I would a family member, I’m not going to do this.”
Dr. Candow doesn’t hand down plans. He lays out the options, explains the tradeoffs, asks what matters to you, and builds the plan from there. He also asks about goals of care, which is a different question from what’s medically possible, and one most patients are never asked at all.
Outside the office, Dr. Candow enjoys running (he and Dr. Botta have completed two half marathons together, one of them on the Airline Trail), but he’ll tell you running is mostly the tool that keeps him fit for everything else. He plays tennis year round, skis in winter, and water skis in summer.
He was born in Okinawa, and two trips are on his list: one to ski and one to scuba dive. He’s an avid diver, which is the running joke between the two physicians. Dr. Botta keeps fish. Dr. Candow visits them.
